After attaining my Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Toronto, I joined Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (the Canadian affiliate Philip Morris International) as Section Leader of the Tobacco Properties lab. My responsibilities included testing the physical characteristics of our products and designing and conducting factory trials to optimize production efficiency and quality.
I stayed with RBH for my entire employment career, advancing to become Manager of Laboratory Information Services. My responsibilities included:
- Develop all the custom computer programs to analyze and report our samples
- Implement automated statistical analysis to ensure our data’s reliability
- Create automated systems to produce government compliance reports
- Manage the testing laboratories
- Support the analytical and software requirements of the Product Development, Quality Assurance, and Manufacturing departments
I also managed the lab’s Quality System to comply with all relevant international standards:
- ISO 9001 Quality
- ISO 17025 Laboratory Proficiency
- ISO 14001 Environmental
- OHSAS 18001 Health & Safety
In particular, my responsibilities included:
- Define and execute department processes
- Identify and implement continual improvement projects
- Manage the internal and external audit programs
- Ensure management control of documents, samples, and records
